Brigg Town Council is to offer to provide a suitable prize (costing up to £50) if the North Lincolnshire authority takes onboard Coun Ann Eardley's suggestion of organising a busking competition to coincide with the 10th anniversary Brigg Farmers' Market at the end of July.
However, Coun Jenny Bell, chairing tonight's meeting of the Town Council's policy committee in the Angel Suite, made it quite clear: "There will be no bunting!"
With today's health and safety requirements, having the bunting strung above town centre streets, and rehung if it falls down in bad weather, can cost several hundred pounds.
"I'm against spending money when we don't have to," said Coun Bell. She also suggested it would be nice if North Lincolnshire Council put more effort into stemming the decline of the weekly Thursday and Saturday general markets in Brigg.
Coun Bell proposed the Town Council should take no action and merely leave North Lincolnshire officials to get on with organising the 10th anniversary market. However, she failed to win any support from fellow members of the committee.
Coun Ben Nobbs thought there was merit in Coun Judith Kitching's idea of a display of photographs in the Market Place showing the good work done by the Town Council. But there were no immediate offers forthcoming from councillors to put that together.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard thought North Lincolnshire officials might arrange some sort of street entertainment.
Are bundles of balloons on string allowed?
ReplyDeleteI'm practising with me comb and strip of sanitized Izel loo paper. I've experimented with Soft-Botty, but it doesn't musically reverberate like traditional Izel.
It is important to use a combination of good notation paper with a hard plastic comb. Nylon combs tend to flex too much during the high notes.
I should win the £50 prize with my recital 'Old Swanny'. I did try some trad jazz, but the paper rips and the comb's teeth fall out!
An inherent danger is rain - the Izel goes all soggy and the notes go flat.
My mate is an expert using a brush.
He plays 'Run Rabbit Run' and from a distant it sounds like the musical soundtrack from 'Hare'.
Any chance the town council could reform the famous punk band The Diseased for the centre stage at Brigg Market Place . After all they took centre stage when the late Pricess Di visited Brigg .
ReplyDeleteMaybe they could be sponsored by Brigg Servicemens Club and belt out their famous hit " I spent £4.20 " which referred to 6 pints of snakebite in the above mentioned club . By my rekonning thats 70p / pint , an updated version could be " I spent £21.60 " at todays prices.
Ken maybe you should have a contingency plan for rain . Silver spoons would merely become slightly dull in such conditions . Could I request I play the spoons by Clive Dunn with My old mans a dustman for an oncore. ?
Hi gmsmithy:
ReplyDeleteHappy Voting Day..
Yeah....we could form a duo. I've got Lonnie D's 45 for the lyrics.
You on the spoons and me on the kazoo comb. I've got an old tea chest bass in the garage, but it may be beyond economical repair - the string's snapped!
Someone on Newlands estate has got a washboard and some finger thimbles.
Should make a good band....but we'll have to discuss proportional arrangements about the prize money

ReplyDeleteWell GM it happened a long time ago. Back in 2004 The Diseased (well three fifths of them) did reform as Diseased Agen as proven here;

They took on Bryan from Blinded by Ivan as drummer. Did a few gigs for us (Brigg Music Club) and packed the Britannia twice. Did a few tour shows rerecorded all of their old songs which are still on the Brit Jukebox and skedaddled.
Was a ton of fun to play on those nights though.
On other musical people of Brigg note Wes of One Car Pile-up former Brig and Wressle resident who now resides in Leeds and formally of Nottingham punks Consumed was at one time a North Lincolnshire.Council dustman.
I mention that because on Wednesday night One Car Played my Mayoral ball along with Zero Hour, Light Scars The Heroic and the Brigg Music Club House Band. We Raised £70 pounds for the Mayoral Ball and had a great old time. Thanks to to the Britannia for hosting us and buffet that vanished in short order.
