TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

As responding to future River Ancholme flooding will be central to the proposed new Brigg Emergency Plan, Brigg Town Council is to combine it with an already-planned meeting involving other parties also interested in cleaning up/improving the river.
The double get-together will be on January 11 in the Angel Suite (6pm). Hopefully, Ian Cawsey MP will be able to attend. Obviously the Environment Agency - responsible for the river - is bound to be represented, together with North Lincolnshire Council. Other "potential partners" will include Brigg voluntary organisations and businesses.
The town council's policy committee agreed the double approach last night, Deputy Town Mayor and flood warden Coun Ben Nobbs saying: "It's important that we do them both together."
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard pointed out it would save everyone's time if they were joined together, rather than expecting people to turn out on two different evenings.
One of the other major inclusions in the Brigg Emergency Plan - how we respond as a community in times of strife - could relate to our relatively close proximity to the airport. Hopefully something that will never need to be tested.
If you, or a group/business with which your are connected, wishes to come to the New Year double meeting, or commit to helping with the Emergency Plan, contact the Brigg Town Council office by email through this link 3Bs

  1. Kenny's ideas for flood defence:

1.Everyone in Brigg given a bucket and sponge!!

2.Instead of trying to control banks of the Ancholme, allow designated fields to flood naturally.

3.Since Corus/Tata already draws water from the Ancholme - it is said that for every 1 tonne of steel produced needs 100 tonnes of water - could the otherwise 'returned', or flood water be drawn and diverted elsewhere - ie the Trent, or flood drains.

    4. Dredge the river - accumulated detrius and rubbish must be depriving the river of max. volume capacity.

5.Get someome to check the levi near the leisure centre - it leaks.
Potentially it could be eroding from the inside and/or slip.

    6. Plan for at least 1m storm rise of the tide during the next few generations.

    7. Dig more dykes to contain increased run-off from fields.

    8. Fit a plug in the Ancholme!

  2. I never know whether non-Briggies can attend these sort of meetings.

If there ever is an emergency, flood, or otherwise, it would seem odd if only Brigg had a plan. It would seem to be more sensible to have a Brigg Area strategy - remembering as well as the Vale of Ancholme, we also have an international airport and a motorway in this area.

  3. If they fitted a plug in the Ancholme some bright spark would only pull it out.

I propose that if it rains on St Swithens day we shall have 40 days and 40 nights of rain and the population of Brigg should emigrate to the parish of Wrawby .
