A Brigg business is sponsoring the kit worn by a team at Elsham Golf Club.

Elsham Golf Club Girls squad can’t wait for the new season to begin, especially given the recent weather problems.
That did not stop them having a get-together in the clubhouse for a 2020 season launch event starting with the Girls Squad Captain’s Opening Speech by Livia Piner.
This was followed by followed by a photo presentation recalling the last three years of sweat, toil and even smiles as the girls came to grips with starting golf. More important were the plans for 2020.
The girls were presented with new ‘Squad Kit’ by sponsors Aimee Waudby of Kennedi Ladies Boutique in Brigg (seen on the right of the above picture).
Past Captain Suzanne Watson presented the first girls squad Captain, Livia, with her captain’s badge which had been kindly donated by Suzanne (see picture immediately below). Livia was also presented with her Captain’s photo which will be up in the clubhouse with the other 2020 senior office holders.
David McNicholas is the resident PGA Professional based at Elsham Golf Club. He turned professional in 2007 and worked as an assistant Pro before graduating from the PGA Academy in 2010.
Since qualifying he has gained a strong reputation for coaching and is available for tuition ALL year round. He continues to further his studies in Golf & Sports Psychology, whilst currently designing his own short game programme. His unique holistic approach has helped golfers of all levels, from beginners to those with European Tour experience.
He’s also a regular player on both the local and Midland PGA circuits and creditably finished in the top 10 of the Lincolnshire PGA Order of Merit every season since turning professional. He is the former Lincolnshire Assistants Champion and Lincolnshire PGA Captain, currently sits on the PGA committee and is the County’s representative on the Partnership Board.
David is proud of the team he is assembling in the Pro Shop since taking over in July 2016. Dane Duffin is the Assistant Professional and is in year 2 of his PGA Qualification. Dane has a strong background in retail. Dane has worked closely with the local community in previous years, leading the schools coaching in the area whilst hosting a Girls Open event here at the club.
2018 saw the Pro Shop Team win the Laddie Lucas award which is a National Coaching Honour presented to them at Wentworth Golf Club at the Golf Foundation President’s Awards. The Laddie Lucas award celebrates a project that has created more opportunities for girls to get involved in golf. Elsham Golf Club were also recognised for their efforts in opening their doors to all golfers and as a team moving the club forward in the previous 2 years.
It was the theatre of dreams! The 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf tournament came to an exciting end with thousands of golf fans once again pushing off the Super Bowl to see who would be crowned ‘The People’s Open Champion.’ It was American Webb Simpson who found himself in the TPC Scottsdale winner’s circle after a thrilling sudden-death play-off against Tony Finau.
Watching it all from close quarters and playing a key part in producing immaculate greens, was Head Greenkeeper at Elsham Golf Club, Colin Hopper.
He described his time working at the Phoenix Open as ‘thoroughly enjoyable, but demanding, an experience he will never forget.’
“There were several highlights of my time in Arizona non more so than the iconic stadium hole on the 16th. The atmosphere was unbelievable especially on the Saturday where there were 17,000 fans inside the 16th hole and around 200,000 in total just on the course that day, with around 600,00 fans in total for the week.”
The tournament is considered to be the biggest event on the golf tour outside the major championships.
“I was there for just over 2 weeks in total. The 1st week was the final prep week where I did everything from shovelling desert gravel to hand mowing greens. Preparing for such a prestigious event involved long hours with over 40 staff and volunteers working hard to ensure the golf course was in pristine condition. The tournament week meant another 30+ volunteers joined us. From there we were allocated specific tasks for the week so everyone knew what they were doing each day. My jobs were rolling the back 9 greens in the morning and mowing the front 9 fairways in the afternoon.”
One reason for Colin going to Phoenix was to gain experience of green keeping and course maintenance and bring that back to Elsham!
“The attention to detail was one thing that stands out with nothing out of place and everything in perfect condition. Although we will never have the budget and man power of a course that holds a major tournament, I feel we can emulate some of the things that are done to further improve the standards here at Elsham. Having successfully hosted the English Amateur Seniors event in 2019 I feel we are defiantly on the right tracks.”
“I experienced different green-keeping methods and course management techniques, meeting green-keepers from all over the world and discussing a whole range of green-keeping topics along with networking and making new friends within the industry. I must give a big thank you to Elsham Golf Club for allowing me to go and the members who also contributed towards some of the costs.”
