BRIGG PLAY SECOND FIDDLE TO BROUGHTON IN REC GROUND DERBY

Brigg Town Cricket Club hosted Broughton 2nds in a local derby at the Recreation Ground, off Wrawby Road, on Saturday (July 6).
With the sun coming out from time to time, this game attracted plenty of spectators, chiefly former Brigg players of the past. 
Onlookers seated on the boundary included former Brigg strokemaker Col Mumby, who lives in the town and was Broughton's 12th man for this encounter.
Broughton 2nds, who are clear leaders in Lincolnshire County Cricket League Division Three, enjoyed a very convincing victory to stay on track for promotion and the championship trophy.
Missing a few key players, Brigg failed to make major inroads into Broughton's batting line-up until late on, and the visitors rattled up an impressive 224 for nine in their permitted 45 overs.
Openers Nick Crawford and Joshua Smith contributed handy scores in the 20s but the main impetus came from the middle-order, with big-hitting Russ Blackburn cracking 61 and all-rounder Paul Clark 58.
Former Brigg player Simon Cross added 14 low down the order and there was a handy last-wicket stand of 33 between wicketkeeper Lee Stothard (19 not out) and Yogesh Jayasundera (10 not out) .

Opening left-arm seamer Nick Beacock took one for 36 in 12 tidy overs. However, it was left to veteran slow bowlers Jack Richards and John Danson to get among the wickets and earn Brigg a handful of bonus points.
Jack recovered from conceding 19 runs in his opening over to bag four for 79 from a 12-over stint, while John took two for nine in a shorter spell.
This experienced duo accounted for both Broughton's top scorers, which helped to put a slight brake on the scoring rate.
After tea taken in the Rec's Community Room, Brigg set about their reply. However, early wickets meant they were never in the hunt, being skittled for 59 - in 30 overs.
The only batters into double figures were Mark Dawson (11) and Nick Beacock (10 not out).
Andrew Hillyard (five for 21), Clark (four for 16) and Jayasundera (one for 16) did all the bowling.
Result: Broughton 2nds (20 pts) beat Brigg Town (4 pts) by 165 runs - resulting in Town dropping a place to fourth in the standings.

Elsewhere in the Lincolnshire League on Saturday, Division Two leaders Hibaldstow secured a fine home win over Lincoln side Hartsholme 2nds, Josh Cowling hitting 60, Joe Taylor an unbeaten 50 and Jon Taylor taking four for 13.
In Division One, Broughton's first teamers suffered a 108-run home defeat at the hands of Louth 2nds. Broughton managed to pull off three run-outs in the field but, needing 213 runs for victory, fell well short.
