Sizeable rises in the cost of cutting the grass in some parts of Brigg and servicing the path-salting bins prompted discussion during the Town Council's monthly meeting.
Brigg Town Council pays an annual fee for North Lincolnshire Council to carry out this work on its behalf, through what are called service level agreements.
For the next financial year, the unitary authority is seeking a 64 per cent rise to £630 to attend to the salt bins provided at various locations in Brigg, while the requested cost of maintaining the riverside Memorial Garden near the Ancholme Way Bridge involves an increase from £391 to £1,050 for tending grass, shrubs and hedges.
The proposed charge for grass cutting at the allotments is £140 during the next financial year.
Coun Mike Campion said North Lincolnshire Council was proposing "very big increases" and he asked why this was the case.
Coun Rob Waltham, who is the leader of the unitary authority as well as being a member of Brigg Town Council, stressed that - by law - they could not make a profit on work like this; nor could they do it at subsidised rates.
Coun James Truepenny successfully suggested the Town Council should seek to negotiate a shorter period than a full year in respect of Memorial Garden maintenance.
Town councillors agreed to accept the proposed increase in charges for salt bin servicing and grass cutting at the allotments.
During times of ice and snow, householders are welcome to spread the contents of the salt bins on public footpaths nearby.
These are then topped up by the council to ensure a supply is maintained.

.....and the boat (part of) seen at the jetty was used during the contractual river clean....tsken about 4 years ago...
......and the cost of going full-colour....£200 less than black and white.
The moral is to shop around and negotiate and barter....and we got better quality paper....Circulation is now around 5000....not bad for a magazine run by volunteers, is self-financing by adverts (very cheap) and is distributed door to door in Brigg, Scawby Brook. Cadney, Howsham and Wrawby by about 90 community-minded folk...thank you.

For note: by coincidence, the Memorial Garden is very near the site from where the Brigg Bronze Age Logboat was excavated....but a plaque/notice is conspicous by its absence...
