PLANS FOR A TALENT CONTEST IN BRIGG TO SHOWCASE LOCAL TALENT

Our Town Council has been contacted by someone interested in organising a talent show to demonstrate that Brigg's Got Talent.  Benjamin George is thinking of auditions and a live final.
Town councillors liked the idea but suggested further detail was required. For Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood did not want to see additional work being created for council staff.
Coun Ann Eardley wondered whether they might consider offering the Angel Suite as  a suitable venue.
But Coun Rob Waltham suggested they should put the would-be organiser in touch with people who could give help and advice. Coun James Truepenny agreed that the applicant needed "to network with the right people."

TESCO TO BE APPROACHED TO TACKLE LITTER IN BRIGG

Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite considered an email from an upset member of the public complaining about the amount of litter  near the former Lidl store which has now been taken over by Tesco
The complaint about the Spring's Parade area mentioned bottles, cans and discarded fast-food wrappers.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard suggested it was a matter for Tesco.
Coun Mike Campion said the emailer was not the first to point our the mess. People who dropped the litter were at fault. But he added: "Tesco, as I understand it, have a responsibility to tidy it up."
Coun Campion suggested Tesco needed to get things cleaned up regularly.
Coun Rob Waltham felt a very strong letter was called for, with a copy being sent to Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy to keep him informed.
Coun Ann Eardley suggested that installing  bins would give people visiting the area at night somewhere to put their litter.

MORE BUSES SERVING BRIGG

We've just had notice that more buses are now picking up in Brigg - this time from PC Executive Coaches of Lincoln Ltd, which runs coach holidays.

"We look forward to welcoming you aboard," the firm is telling Brigg people in its leaflet sent to some households.

SATURDAY NIGHT AROUND BRIGG - PART TWO

There was some good music being played on Saturday night in the Woolpack and Dying Gladiator pubs in Brigg town centre - if you are a middle-aged pub-goer and savour The Sounds of the Seventies.
Earlier, down at the Black Bull, we enjoyed what turned into something of a Brigg Hockey Club reunion - totally unplanned. It was good to see Keith Smith and Val Jeffrey teaming up again.
How many goals did the duo score for Brigg with their well-worked short corner routine?
Discussions at two of the hostelries turned to the contents of a recent column we penned for the Brigg page of the Scunthorpe Telegraph which mentioned well-known families of the 1960s and 1970s who lived in Hawthorn Avenue.
It was heartening to know that half-a-dozen paragraphs created such interest.
Returning to "The Woolie" there's Stone's Bitter on tap - a tipple some of us sampled for the first time in the '70s. They had it in the old Queen's Arms for many years, we recall.
During our next Saturday night sortie/trip down memory lane we plan to drop in at the Britannia and the White Horse.
Is it a sign of advancing years that it now takes us several weekends to visit the pubs we once toured in the same night?

DID YOU SEE BRIGG MAYOR ON THE TELLY?

If you watched BBC Look North last night you may have spotted Brigg Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood  and Coun Mike Campion during the programme's report from Humberside Airport at Kirmington. Mike represents the Town Council on an airport committee, while John was there as the first citizen of the nearest town to the airport.
They were in the background, behind the reporter, as she delivered her piece "to camera" as they say.
The councillors managed to make it to Brigg Town Council's monthly meeting a little later in the evening, down at the Angel Suite. Coun Kitwood, as Town Mayor, took the chair.

MATURE BRIGG HEDGEROW WILL LIVE ON

An assurance has been given about the mature hedgerow beside the towpath of the Old River Ancholme in Brigg
Coun Ann Eardley was a shade concerned about its future and raised the matter at last night's meeting of Brigg Town Council in the Angel Suite.
However, Coun Rob Waltham - a member of the controlling Cabinet at North Lincolnshire Council - said that although the hedgerow was very overgrown in places and needed cutting back, it was not going to be damaged.

NEW FACE OVERSEEING BRIGG DELIBERATIONS

It was good to see one of the newest town councillors in Brigg in charge of a committee meeting in the Angel Suite last night.
Coun Donald Campbell presided at a session of the Planning and Environment Committee.
All went very smoothly and he was able to close the meeting in very quick time, all the necessary business having been concluded.
Coun Campbell was recently made vice-chairman of the committee.

298 RUNNERS IN THE BRIGG POPPY 10K - PICTURES BY KEN HARRISON

BRIGG POPPY 10K
WW2 Jeep and British soldier - American jeep with the Allied Star insignia of all Allied Forces taking part in the Normandy Landings - to aid identification - in the same way, Allied aircraft were painted with under-wing black & white stripes. The Lee-Enfield .303 rifle was used in WW1 and was still the main British infantry weapon during WW2.....Indeed, it wasn't replaced until the early 1960s.
Sincere thanks to Ken Harrison for these pix from the Brigg Poppy 10k in which he reports there were 298 runners - just two short of the permitted maximum. MANY MORE PIX FROM KEN TO COME...IN FUTURE POSTINGS

LORRY IN LAY-BY ILLUSTRATES WHY BRIGG PARKING BAYS WOULD BE WELCOME

Brigg Blog recently posted a suggestion that North Lincolnshire Council puts  some down some white lines in the lay-bys near the old Post Office, on Bigby Street, in an effort to make better use of the available parking space.
The problem is that someone parks in the middle and effectively takes up three parking places.
We failed to find a suitable picture in our extensive archive to illustrate the story at the time. But yesterday we spotted this lorry which could not have been better placed to make our point for us.

NEW TOWN HOUSES COMING TO BRIGG

Work has started on building more Brigg houses on the vacant land near the Angel Suite and behind the Lord Nelson - close to the Market Place and Elwes Street.
The sign advertising the 3-bedroom town houses has been here some time, as you can see from the picture above.
